石川真生 私に何ができるか（東京オペラシティアートギャラリー） Ishikawa Mao - What can I do? (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery)

 

1953年に沖縄で生まれた写真家、石川真生の写真展。

米軍基地の兵士相手の娼婦たち、米軍基地に反対する地元の人々、港町で暮らす漁師たちの日常、農場でヤギと戯れる人、祭りの供物をする人々、そして石川の家族の人々。

地元の沖縄をテーマにした様々な写真作品が展示されていた。

石川がカメラを向ける対象には、何の制約もないように見える。沖縄の日常が、そこには映されている。

しかしそうした写真の中には、基地の存在がどうしても気になる。

決して声高に、基地問題を訴えるのではなく、こうした何気ない風景写真の中の被写体として見ると、その存在の深刻さを改めて感じられた。

A photo exhibition by Mao Ishikawa, a photographer born in Okinawa in 1953.

Prostitutes who work with soldiers at a US military base, local people who oppose the US military base, the daily lives of fishermen living in a port town, people playing with goats on a farm, people making offerings at a festival, and Ishikawa families.

Various photographic works with the theme of local Okinawa were on display.

There seem to be no restrictions on what Ishikawa points his camera at. Everyday life in Okinawa is reflected there.

However, the presence of bases in these photographs is undeniable.

Rather than voicing the issue of military bases out loud, seeing them as subjects in these casual landscape photographs made me realize once again the seriousness of their existence.
