この美術館に所縁のある、山田寅次郎をテーマにした展覧会。
現代アートがテーマの多いワタリウムにあって、珍しい企画だった。
山田寅次郎は、明治に生まれ、トルコのエルトゥールル号の遭難を知り義援金を集めてトルコにわたったことから、日本とトルコの友好に貢献した人物。
日本の文化に興味を持っていた、トルコのスルタン、アブドゥルハミト2世から信頼され、近代トルコの建国の父、アタチュルクにも面会したことがあったという。
会場には、山田寅次郎がトルコについて書いた本や、彼がトルコから持ち帰ったものなどが展示されていた。
山田寅次郎のことは、朧げには知っていたが、晩年、茶道の家元になっていたことは知らなかった。
また、築地の本願寺などを建築した伊東忠太とトルコで知り合い、生涯にわたり交友関係を続けていた。
二人の関係を窺わせる、お互いでやり取りした膨大な絵葉書に、その関係の深さがよく現れていた。
An exhibition themed around Torajiro Yamada, who is connected to this museum.
It was an unusual project for Watarium, which has a lot of contemporary art themes.
Torajiro Yamada was born in the Meiji era and contributed to the friendship between Japan and Turkey by collecting donations and traveling to Turkey after learning about the Ertugrul shipwreck in Turkey.
He was trusted by Turkey's Sultan Abdulhamid II, who was interested in Japanese culture, and reportedly even met Ataturk, the founding father of modern Turkey.
At the venue, books written by Torajiro Yamada about Turkey and items he brought back from Turkey were on display.
I vaguely knew about Torajiro Yamada, but I didn't know that in his later years he became a master of the tea ceremony.
He also met Chuta Ito, the architect of Honganji Temple in Tsukiji, in Turkey, and they remained friends throughout his life.
The depth of their relationship was clearly reflected in the huge amount of postcards they exchanged.
