横尾龍彦 瞑想の彼方（埼玉県立近代美術館館） Yokoo Tatsuhiko: Beyond the Realm of Meditation (Museum of Modern Art, Saitama)

 

横尾龍彦の展覧会が葉山の神奈川県立近代美術館で開催されることを知り、そこを訪れようと思っていたが、その後、馴染みのこの美術館に巡回することを知り、葉山をパスして北浦和の地を訪ねた。

横尾龍彦のことはこれまで寡聞にも全く知らなかった。

展覧会の案内文の中に、ルドルフ・シュタイナーの思想に影響と受けた、という部分を見つけて、俄然、興味が湧いた。

横尾龍彦は、1928年に福岡で生まれて、2015年に亡くなるまで、その画風を何回かガラッと変えた。

一番印象に残ったのは、シュタイナーの思想やヒエロニムス・ボシュの絵画に影響を受けた、1975年から1985年あたりにかけての作品だろうか。

海なのか、空なのかは不明だが、色鮮やか青色の中に、何とも表現の使用のない、生き物か模様のような不思議な造形が描かれている作品が、見応えがあった。

その時期の、種村季弘、高橋厳、鎌田東二などとの交流のエピソードも興味深かった。

1985年以降は、伝統回帰だろうか、書道の影響を受けたような作品が多い。

幼い頃から、スピリチュアルな体験をしていたという横尾龍彦にとって、絵を描くという体験は、そうした何か霊的な体験や感覚を、カンバスに表そうとする作業であったのかもしれない。

When I found a part in the guide to the exhibition that he was influenced by the thought of Rudolf Steiner, he suddenly became interested.

Tatsuhiko Yokoo was born in Fukuoka in 1928, and until his death in 2015, he changed his style several times.

What impressed him the most was his work from around 1975 to 1985, influenced by Steiner's thought and the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch.

It is not clear whether it is the sea or the sky, but it was worth seeing the work that depicts a mysterious formation that looks like a creature or a pattern without using any expression in the vivid blue color.

The episodes of interactions with Suehiro Tanemura, Gen Takahashi, and Toji Kamata during that period were also interesting.

Since 1985, there are many works that seem to have been influenced by calligraphy, perhaps as a return to tradition.

For Tatsuhiko Yokoo, who has had spiritual experiences since childhood, the experience of painting may have been a process of trying to express such spiritual experiences and sensations on canvas.
