これまでも、シャガールのダフニスとクロエ、サーカスなどの色鮮やかな版画作品の中の何点かは目にしたことがあったが、これほどまとまった数の作品を目にしたのは初めてだった。
とりわけ、ダフニスとクロエに関しては、版画に描かれた場面を通して、ストーリーを意識しながら見ることができた。
サーカスには、空中ブランコや、猛獣使いや馬など動物が多く登場する。
シャガールの絵画には、空中を浮遊している人物や、いろんな種類の動物などがよく登場する。それはシャガールがサーカスを好きだったことと関係があるのかな、などと思ってしまった。
シャガールは、現在のベラルーシの地で生まれたユダヤ人で、サンクトペテルブルクで絵を学んだ。
そうしたシャガールの年譜を見ていたら、現在ウクライナで行われている戦争のことを連想し、これまでとは少し違った視点でシャガールの作品に向き合った。
ポエムといシャガールが詩も担当した版画集では、ユダヤ人としてのシャガールの一面も垣間見ることもできた。

I had seen some of Chagall's colorful prints such as Daphnis and Chloe and the Circus before, but I had never seen such a large number of works. .
In particular, I was able to see Daphnis and Chloe while being conscious of the story through the scenes depicted in the prints.
Many animals appear in the circus, such as trapeze, wild beast tamers, and horses.
Chagall's paintings often feature floating figures and animals of all kinds. She wondered if it had something to do with Chagall's love of the circus.
Chagall was a Jew born in what is now Belarus and studied painting in Saint Petersburg.
Looking at Chagall's chronology reminded him of the war currently being waged in Ukraine, and approached Chagall's work from a slightly different point of view.
In the collection of prints called Poem, in which Chagall also wrote poetry, we were able to get a glimpse of one side of Chagall as a Jew.
