若林奮 森のはずれ（武蔵野美術大学 美術館） Isamu Wakabayashi: Outskirts of the Forest (Musashino Art University Museum)

今年、若林奮が亡くなってから20年になる。

そのため、各地で若林の回顧展や企画展示が行われている。

若林が教師を務めていた武蔵野美術大学には、”森のはずれ”という作品があり、その作品や関連する資料などが展示される展覧会が行われた。

初めて若林の作品を目にしたのはいつのことであったろうか。

あまりにもその作品が表している内容が、理解不能であったので、それが故にこの彫刻家に興味を持った。

この展覧会でも、30年ぶりに展示されたという”森のはずれ”という作品も、その他に展示されていた”Daisy”シリーズなどの作品も、あいも変わらず理解不能で、その作品の前で途方にくれるばかりであった。

若林は生涯を通じて、自然と人間、というより自分自身と自然も含めた周りの世界との関係を確認するための作品を作り続けた。

それは、かつてこの世にあったものではならず、故に若林はこれまでに誰もが見たことがないような作品を作り続けた。

その意味では、若林奮という芸術家は、最も独創的でかつ最も個性的であった芸術家の一人であった、と言い切ってしまっていいのかもしれない。

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Isamu Wakabayashi's passing.

Therefore, retrospective exhibitions and special exhibitions of Wakabayashi are being held in various places.

At Musashino Art University, where Wakabayashi was a teacher, there was a work called "Outskirts of the forest", and an exhibition was held to display that work and related materials.

When was the first time you saw Wakabayashi's work?

The content expressed by the work was too incomprehensible, which is why I became interested in this sculptor.

In this exhibition as well, the work "Outskirts of the Forest", which was exhibited for the first time in 30 years, and the other works such as the "Daisy" series that were on display, were still incomprehensible. I was at a loss.

Throughout his life, Wakabayashi continued to create works that sought to confirm the relationship between nature and humans, or rather between himself and the world around him, including nature.

It was not something that existed in the past, so Wakabayashi continued to create works that no one had ever seen before.

In that sense, it may be fair to say that Isamu Wakabayashi was one of the most original and unique artists.
