古代メキシコで栄えた文明から、テオティワカン、マヤ、アステカの3つの文明を豊富な出土品で紹介した展覧会。
最初のコーナーでは、アメリカ大陸の多用な自然環境、主要な穀物としてのトウモロコシ、天体と暦、人身供犠など、古代メキシコ文明に主要な特徴に関する展示があって、来場者を古代メキシコの世界観に誘ってくれる。
その後は、今回のテーマである3つの文明についての展示が順番に続く。
巨大なピラミッドで知られる、メキシコの中央高原地域に前150年から500年頃にかけて栄えたテオティワカン文明に関する展示では、蛇や鳥などを形どった造形が実にユニークだった。
そうした造形は、日本で生まれたウルトラマンなどのヒーローと怪獣が戦うというフィクションに大きな影響を与えた。
前1200年から1697年まで栄えたマヤ文明の展示では、何とも不思議な形のマヤ文字、驚くほど正確だったという暦などの展示が目を引いた。
他の文明のように、中央に集中した統治地域を持たなかったマヤ文明は、それが理由なのか驚くほど長くメキシコのマヤ地域で繁栄した。
今回の展覧会の目玉でもある、美しい青いヒスイで作られた、赤の女王のマスクとその他の色鮮やかな装飾品は、とりわけ見応えがあった。
アステカは、スペイン人によって徹底的に破壊されたせいか、展示品は少なかったが、最近発見されたという金で作られたペンダントの美しさが印象的だった。
