幕末土佐の天才絵師 絵金（あべのハルカス美術館） Genius painting of Tosa at the end of the Edo period: Ekin (Abeno Harukasu Art Museum)

 

絵金のことは以前、聞いたことがあり、高知を訪れた時にその絵を見てみたいと考えていたが残念ながらその機会がなかった。

その後、ある展覧会で何点かは目にしたことがあったが、ようやくまとまった数の作品を目にする機会を得た。

絵金といえば、血が大量に描かれた、おどろおどろしい作品のイメージが強かったが、そうした凄惨なイメージの絵以外にも、色々な種類の作品を見ることができた。

それでも、絵金の絵の中には、喜怒哀楽が極端なほどにデフォルメされて表現されていて、紛れもない日本のバロック画家、と言っていいだろう。

絵金が生きた時代は、幕末から明治にかけての激動の時代だった。

坂本龍馬らが活躍した幕末の時代に生きた絵金の生涯のエピソードを見ると、政治的な事件が見え隠れしている。

安政時代に起きた、安政東海地震では、高知にも巨大な津波が押し寄せて、その被害の様子を絵金は絵の中に記録した。

高知では、夏になると絵金の屏風を飾るお祭りが今も行われている。その様子が会場に再現されていて、高知の人々にとって絵金は今でも身近な存在であることが感じられた。

I had heard about Ekin before and wanted to see his paintings when I visited Kochi, but unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity.

After that, he had seen a few works at an exhibition, but he finally had the opportunity to see a large number of works.

Speaking of Ekin, the image of scary paintings with a lot of blood was strong, but I was able to see various kinds of paintings other than paintings with such a gruesome image.

Even so, in Ekin's paintings, emotions are expressed in extremely deformed forms, and it can be said that he is an unmistakably Japanese baroque painter.

Ekin lived in a turbulent period from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period.

Looking at episodes from the life of Ekin, who lived during the end of the Edo period when Ryoma Sakamoto and others were active, political incidents can be glimpsed and hidden.

In the Ansei Tokai Earthquake that occurred in the Ansei period, a huge tsunami surged to Kochi, and Ekin recorded the damage in his paintings.

In Kochi, there is still a summer festival where paintings are decorated with folding screens. The scene was recreated at the venue, and I felt that Ekin was still a familiar presence for the people of Kochi.
