憧憬の地 ブルターニュ（国立西洋美術館） Brittany, Land of Inspiration (National Museum of Western Art)

多くの画家たちのインスピレーションを刺激した、ブルターニュをテーマにした展覧会。

ブルターニュと言えば、ゴーガンという名前がまず思い浮かぶ。

しかし、彼以前にも、ターナーやモネといった画家たちもその地の風景を描いていた。

それでもやはりこの展覧会の主役は、ゴーガンと、ベルナールやセリジェらのいわゆるポン＝タヴェン派の画家たちの作品だろう。

ナビ派のモーリス・ドニの作品も多く展示されていて嬉しかった。

ブルターニュという土地は、古代の巨石文明の痕跡やケルト人の足跡なども残っていて、フランス人にとっては身近な異郷の地であったようだ。

明治や大正期にフランスを訪れた日本の画家たちも、ゴーガンらを惹きつけたその地を訪れて、多くの作品を残した。

ブルターニュという土地を、絵画という視点で見てきたが、画家たちが自らの作品に描いた風景は、絵画世界の中にしか存在しない憧憬の地の風景なのかもしれない。

The land of Brittany was a foreign land familiar to the French, with traces of ancient megalithic civilizations and the footprints of the Celts.

Japanese painters who visited France in the Meiji and Taisho periods also visited the land that attracted Gauguin and others, and left many works there.

I have seen the land of Brittany from the perspective of painting, and the landscapes depicted by the painters in their own works may be landscapes of a land of longing that exists only in the world of paintings.
