Sakutaro Hagiwara: Howl at the moon (Setagaya Literary Museum)

The year 2022 marks the 180th anniversary of the death of poet Sakutaro Hagiwara.

Various exhibitions and special exhibitions were held all over the country under the plan of Hagiwara Sakutaro Taizen 2022.

The exhibition held at the Setagaya Literature Museum is one of them.

While tracing the life of Sakutaro Hagiwara, I was able to see representative works such as "Howl at the Moon" and "Aoneko" as well as their handwritten manuscripts, concept notes, and letters to acquaintances.

In addition, the photographs taken by Sakutaro Hagiwara and the fact that he was interested in magic were introduced, and I was able to touch on the humanity of Sakutaro Hagiwara.

I reread the poems of Sakutaro Hagiwara for the first time since I was a student, and I was once again impressed by his original and novel expression.

Hagiwara Sakutarō also wrote a critique called Principles of Poetry, and was also a theorist who argued for the superiority of modern colloquial poetry.

Sakutaro Hagiwara had modern tastes at the time, such as Western music, photography, and movies, and I could feel the atmosphere of the Taisho era.
