美しい本 湯川書房の書物と版画（神奈川県立近代美術館 鎌倉別館） Beautiful Books: Publications by Yukawa Shobō and Prints from the Museum Collection (The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama)

 

寡聞にも湯川書房のことは、この展覧会を見るまで知らなかった。

湯川成一によって1969年に大阪で設立された出版社で、美しくアイデアに溢れた魅力的な書物を次々と出版した。

湯川成一は出版の企画から、装丁、造本に至るまで全て自らの手で行った。

2008年の湯川の死によってその活動は終わりを迎えたが、その美しい本は今での古本マーケットで盛んに売買されている。

会場には、小川国夫、加藤周一、谷崎潤一郎、塚本邦雄、辻邦生、車谷長吉などの美しい本が展示されていた。

どれ一つとして同じような装丁の本はなく、唯一無二という言葉が相応しい。

版画家の柄澤齊は、そうした本の挿絵を何度も依頼され、湯川本人とも交友関係にあった。

湯川書房の本と合わせて、柄澤の代表作のクロノスの盃や、ランボーやカフカ、泉鏡花などのモデルの特徴を見事に表現した肖像など、柄澤の版画作品も展示されていた。

電子書籍では決して味わうことができない、芸術品としての本の魅力とその世界を、十二分に味わうことができた。

残念だったのは図録が作られていなかったこと。公立美術館として初めて湯川書房の全貌を紹介する回顧展とのことだったので、小規模であっても図録を準備して欲しかった。

I didn't even know about Yukawa Shobo until I saw this exhibition.

A publishing company founded in Osaka in 1969 by Seiichi Yukawa, which has published a series of attractive books full of beautiful ideas.

Seiichi Yukawa did everything by himself, from the planning of the publication to the binding and bookbinding.

Yukawa's death in 2008 put an end to his activities, but his beautiful books are now actively being bought and sold on second-hand book markets.

Beautiful books by Kunio Ogawa, Shuichi Kato, Junichiro Tanizaki, Kunio Tsukamoto, Kunio Tsuji, Chokichi Kurumatani and others were on display at the venue.

None of the books have the same binding, and the word "one and only" is appropriate.

The printmaker Hitoshi Karasawa was asked many times to draw illustrations for such books, and was on friendly terms with Yukawa himself.

In addition to Yukawa Shobo's book, Karasawa's prints were also on display, such as Karasawa's representative work, the Cup of Chronos, and portraits of models such as Rambo, Kafka, and Kyoka Izumi.

I was able to fully enjoy the charm of the book as a work of art and its world, which can never be experienced with e-books.

Unfortunately, no catalog was produced. Since it was the first retrospective exhibition to introduce the whole picture of Yukawa Shobo as a public art museum, I wanted a catalog to be prepared even if it was small.
