蔡國強 宇宙遊 ―〈原初火球〉から始まる（国立新美術館） Cai Guo-Qiang: Ramble in the Cosmos―From Primeval Fireball Onward (National Art Center, Tokyo)

以前、横浜美術館で行われた蔡國強の展覧会を訪れた。

火薬を使った作品や、巨大なインスタレーションなど、印象は強く残っていたが、今回の展覧会は初めは行くつもりはなかった。

蔡が若い頃日本のいわきで暮らしていて、今でも交流があるという話を聞いて、蔡の意外な一面を感じて、訪れることにした。

中国にいた頃の初期の作品から、アメリカやヨーロッパで行われた様々なプロジェクトの映像、最近の作品までが展示されていた。

火薬を使ったアート作品は、ある程度の完成系のイメージは描けるだろうが、実際は爆発してみないと実際にどうなるかはわからない。

蔡の作品には、そうした作家の意志とは異なる、偶然性があることが面白いのだと、改めて気付かされた。

勿論、中国出身のアーティストが、中国で発明されたとされる火薬を使って作品を作るということや、作品の背景にある東洋的な思想という側面も、蔡の作品の見どころでもある。

今回の展覧会では、火薬を使った作品にフォーカスが当てられていたが、”未知との遭遇”という作品のような巨大なインスタレーションも展示されていた。

この展覧会の直前にいわきで開催された花火のイベントの映像が流されていたが、桜の木をイメージした、ピンク色の花火は、とにかく美しく、いわきの青い空に打ち上げられていた。

Previously, I visited the Cai Guo-Qiang exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art.

His works using gunpowder and his huge installation left a strong impression on me, but I had no intention of going to this exhibition at first.

When I heard that Cai lived in Iwaki, Japan when he was young, and we still keep in touch with each other, I felt an unexpected side of him and decided to visit.

His early work in China, footage of various projects in the US and Europe, and more recent work were on display.

Art works using gunpowder can be drawn to a certain degree of completion, but you can't know how it will actually turn out until it explodes.

I was reminded once again that Cai's works are interesting in that they have an element of chance that differs from the artist's will.

Of course, the fact that an artist from China creates works using gunpowder, which is said to have been invented in China, and the aspect of oriental thought behind the work are also the highlights of Cai's work.

This exhibition focused on works using gunpowder, but there was also a huge installation such as "Encounters with the Unknown".

A video of a fireworks event held in Iwaki just before this exhibition was shown, and the pink fireworks, which were inspired by cherry blossom trees, were so beautiful that they were launched into the blue sky of Iwaki.
