椿椿山と言えば、渡辺崋山の弟子、という程度の認識しかなかった。
これまで見てきた江戸絵画についての展覧会でも、せいぜい何点かしか展示されておらず、脇役的な印象が強かった。
この展覧会を見た後、そうしたこれまでの椿椿山に対するイメージは全く違ったものになった。
とりわけ、魚楽図という作品には大きな衝撃を受けた。
水面に落ちた花の周りに小さな魚たちが集まってくる様子が描かれている。
その魚たちの配置のバランスが絶妙で、魚たちが本当に泳いでいるように感じられる。
清の時代の画家に影響を受けた作品とのことだが、しばらくその絵の前から離れることができなかった。
他には、久能山を描いた、久能山真景図とても印象的だった。久能山に登る急な山道を、老僧と思しき人物とその付人が歩いているが、山頂はまだまだ遠くにある。
椿椿山と言えば、花鳥画が有名で、全国から絵の注文が入るほどその名は知られていたらしい。
西洋の博物画の影響を受けたような、細かい部分まで丹念に描き込まれたそうした花鳥画は確かに素晴らしい出来だった。
蛮社の獄によって、不遇の死を遂げた師の渡辺崋山の渾身の肖像画や、家長を失った家族を気遣う椿椿山の書簡の展示も興味深かった。
Speaking of Tsubaki Chinzan, there was only a degree of recognition that he was a disciple of Kazan Watanabe.
Even in the exhibitions about Edo paintings that I have seen so far, only a few works were exhibited at most, and I had a strong impression that they played a supporting role.
After seeing this exhibition, the image I had of Tsubaki Chinzan has changed completely.
In particular, I was greatly impacted by the work Gyorakuzu.
It depicts how small fish gather around flowers that have fallen on the surface of the water.
The balance of the placement of the fish is exquisite, and it feels like the fish are really swimming.
It is said that this work was influenced by the painters of the Qing dynasty.
In addition, I was very impressed by the painting of Mt. Kuno. A person who seems to be an old monk and his attendants are walking along the steep mountain path to Mt. Kuno, but the summit is still far away.
Speaking of Tsubaki Chinzan, it is famous for bird-and-flower paintings, and it seems that the name was so well-known that orders for paintings came in from all over the country.
These bird-and-flower paintings, with their meticulous attention to detail that seemed to have been influenced by Western natural history paintings, were certainly excellent.
It was also interesting to see a full-body portrait of his master Watanabe Kazan, who died an unfortunate death in Bansha no Goku, and Tsubaki Chinzan's letter of concern for his family, who lost their head of the family.
