Adored Shoukei (Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History)

Shoukei lived in the same Muromachi period as Sesshu.

I have seen several of Shokei's works in exhibitions on the theme of ink paintings from the Muromachi period, but this exhibition presents a large number of his works and his life. I was able to find out by following along.

Due to the change of exhibition, the exhibition focused on portraits and Buddhist paintings instead of landscape paintings. I had seen many landscape paintings so far, so the timing of his visit was perfect.

However, I also has a contradictory feeling that I wanted to take a closer look at landscape paintings.

It is said that Shokei was a monk who served Kencho-ji Temple in Kamakura. The influence of the painting reached the Kanto region, and many copies were also drawn.

In the Edo period, it seems that they were recognized as genuine by the Kano school and were introduced.

Such reproductions were also exhibited, but I was able to realize the magnitude of Shokei's existence.
