パリのポンピドゥー・センターから多くの作品が出品されて開催された、本格的なマチス展。
ギュスターヴ・モローの元で学んでいた頃の初期の作品から、色鮮やかで平面的なマチスの代表的な作品、彫刻や切り絵作品など、マチスの生涯を辿りながら、様々な造形を生み出したマチスの芸術世界を堪能できた。
中でもとりわけ印象的だったのは、数多く展示されていたデッサンだった。
全く迷いのない、一筆書きのようなデッサンだが、稚拙にも見えるその線は、人物や風景の様子を見事に捉えている。
カラフルな絵画のイメージが強いマチスだが、それを支えていたのは、そうしたデッサンに表れている抜群な画家としてのセンスであったのだろう。
マチスの絵にはあまり宗教的なテーマはなかったが、晩年になって、南仏ヴァンスのロザリオ礼拝堂の設計に取り組んだ。
建物だけでなく、内装の他に家具や典礼服のデザインなども行なっている。
同じくモローの元で絵を学んでいたジョルジュ・ルオーは、若い頃からキリストをテーマにした作品を描いていた。
マチスとモローは、描いていたテーマからはあまり結びつかないが、生涯を通じて親しい友人関係であったという。
この展覧会の前に、ルオーについての展覧会にいったせいか、この2人の関係がどんなものであったのか、想いを馳せた。

Perhaps because I went to an exhibition about Rouault before this exhibition, I wondered what kind of relationship these two had.
