東福寺（東京国立博物館） Tofuku-Ji (Tokyo National Museum)

 

紅葉の名所とした知られる京都の東福寺は、京都の五山の一つに数えられる、代表的な禅宗の寺院でもある。

その東福寺から多くのお宝が東京へやってきた。

以前見たテレビ番組の中で、南北朝時代の絵師、明兆のことが紹介されていて、いつか再び東福寺を訪れてみたいと思っていた。

五百羅漢の姿を、10羅漢ずつ50枚の絵に描いた五百羅漢図は、この展覧会の最大の目玉展示の一つだろう。

15枚づつ展示替えされていたが、その15枚だけでの十分に明兆の描いた仏教世界を堪能することができた。

とても印象に残った、死の直前に書かれたというある東福寺の高僧の遺偈。すでに目が見えなくなっていて、書かれている文字は乱れに乱れていた。

展示スペースの最後には、鎌倉時代の巨大な仏像が何体も展示されていて、紅葉の名所であるだけではない、この巨大な禅の寺院の本質に触れたような気がした。

Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto, which is known as a famous place for autumn leaves, is also a representative Zen temple, which is counted as one of Kyoto's five great temples.

Many treasures came to Tokyo from Tofukuji.

In a TV program I saw before, the painter Myocho of the Northern and Southern Courts period was introduced, and I wanted to visit Tofukuji Temple again someday.

The 500 Arhats, which depict the appearance of the 500 Arhats in 50 pictures of 10 Arhats each, is probably one of the biggest highlights of this exhibition.

The exhibition was replaced by 15 pieces, but I was able to fully enjoy the Buddhist world depicted by Myocho with only those 15 pieces.

A verse by a high priest of Tofuku-ji Temple that was written just before his death left a deep impression on me. Already blind, the written letters were disordered.

At the end of the exhibition space, a number of giant Buddha statues from the Kamakura period were displayed, and I felt that I had touched the essence of this huge Zen temple, which is not only a famous spot for autumn leaves.
