南仏というと、どんよりとしたイメージの北部のパリで暮らす芸術家にとって、温かい気候や強烈な日差しがあり、新たな作品を作るために大いにインスピレーションを与える場所という印象がある。
この展覧会では、30人ほどの芸術家の多彩な作品が展示された。
セザンヌ、ピカソ、マティス、シャガールなどは、南仏という言葉とすぐに結びつく。
しかし、第2次世界大戦中に南仏のナチスの収容所に入れられたマックス・エルンストやハンス・ベルメール。
ナチスからアメリカへ逃れるためにビザの発行を待っていたアンドレ・ブルトンやアンドレ・マッソンなどの詳しい経緯をこの展覧会で知ることができた。
同じ時期に、国立西洋美術館やSOMPOミュージアムで、フランスの北部のブルターニュをテーマにして展覧会が開催されていた。
この時期、芸術の都パリだけでなく、フランスの多彩なアート環境を知ることができる期間となった。
